Freedom is a collective good in which your freedom is largely co-dependent upon mine and vice versa. This is probably the best way to understand freedom as a societal phenomenon because it treats freedom as something that can be approached through political and cultural development. But there is still room for describing the different levels of freedom enjoyed by citizens as (in)dividual people. There are bound to be minorities within each country who have significantly lower degrees of freedom than others, just as there are elites whose freedom is significantly higher. The following is a slightly edited extract from Hanzi …

In my previous article, I argued that societies advance through four emotional regimes: from fear, to guilt, to shame, to Sklavenmoral (which, if the pattern holds, is only truly becoming dominant in the most advanced modern societies, a sign of which is increasing narcissism as well as an obsession with the perceived narcissism of others). Again, all of these emotions exist in all societies and all people, but the social logic governing everyday life still varies substantially: What hidden negative emotions are guiding your life choices and everyday interactions? What emotions are you avoiding as you calmly go about your …

Steve McIntosh’s new video, “How to Overcome Polarization in 5-Minutes,” explains how an understanding of the dynamic behavior of “value polarities” can help ameliorate hyper-partisan political polarization. As we weather this pandemic, social solidarity is crucial. And one way to shore up our solidarity is by taking a new perspective on polarization, which this video offers. Our hope is that one potentially positive outcome of the pandemic is that it may result in a 9/11-style pause in America’s political animosity—a temporary reprieve that could provide an opening for a more integrated political perspective to gain traction. This is the second …

There are a few different emotions that control and limit our everyday lives with different avoiding-mechanisms, these being: Fear Guilt Shame and… Sklavenmoral; the “internalized envy of others” (which relates closely to what Nietzsche called “slave morality” in German; with the risk of bending the Nietzschean term, I will use this word). The following is a slightly edited extract from Hanzi Freinacht’s book ‘Nordic Ideology: A Metamodern Guide to Politics, Book Two’. This is the second book in a series on metamodern thought, a work of popular philosophy that investigates the nature of psychological development and its political implications. These …

I published this piece Sept 2018 in the World Academy of Arts and Sciences Journal special issue on Education. As we enter this confusing moment of Covid-19 isolation and systems change, it seems to me to be a moment to rethink most of the ossified patterns of the last centuries, and break free. Education is certainly at the core of this change. This is a long read, but maybe you have time… Starting Monday March 23rd, will be doing a series of calls online for parents interested in mutual learning with their kids in discovery of complexity… _________________________________________________ Humpty Dumpty …

Are we free? Are you, me and everyone else in the democratic West, the supposedly “free world”, as free as anyone is ever going to be? And how do we even measure how free a society is in the first place? The following is a slightly edited extract from Hanzi Freinacht’s book ‘Nordic Ideology: A Metamodern Guide to Politics, Book Two’. This is the second book in a series on metamodern thought, a work of popular philosophy that investigates the nature of psychological development and its political implications. The mainstream way of measuring freedom in a country these days is …

Steve McIntosh’s new book, Developmental Politics—How America Can Grow Into a Better Version of Itself, is now shipping from Amazon. If you want to see a better version of American politics, this is the book for you. Developmental Politics provides the fresh thinking we need to transcend America’s contemporary political impasse. In connection with the book’s launch, Steve has written two op-eds that may be of interest: Op-Ed in The Fulcrum: Polarization Is More of a Cultural Problem Than a Political One This op-ed argues that the rise of progressive culture represents an important step in the evolution of American …

“Stages of development:” foe or friend? Listening to people “frustrated with developmental stages,” I’ve just realized: Only when the energy of the Green wave carries itself to its peak, only then will start the Teal wave emerging and growing the next stage of human consciousness into a society-shaping force. Early- and middle-Green are […]
