Just as the value of money can be deflated[i] in the material economy, so can the honest search for truth in the public domain of ideas and morals. The truth, or the signaled truth-seeking of people, can be viewed as increasingly hollow and cheap when their claims aren’t matched by actual behaviors and sacrifices made. In a society where people use idealistic claims and truth-seeking to boost their own identities, idealism always appears to reek of hypocrisy. The following is a slightly edited extract from Hanzi Freinacht’s book ‘Nordic Ideology: A Metamodern Guide to Politics, Book Two’. This is the second

“I want to live, I want to give I’ve been a miner For a heart of gold. It’s these expressions I never give That keep me searching For a heart of gold And I’m getting old.”[i] —Neil Young It is as though civilization itself is getting too old. And with age follows either decay, dementia and despair—or wisdom and self-knowledge. Can then modernity, the present world-system, begin to know itself? This would be the *meta*-modern mission: to create a deeply self-reflective modernity; a modernity operating not only upon nature and the environment, but one that reexamines its own perspective, its

Nothing pleases people more than to go on thinking what they have always thought, and at the same time imagine that they are thinking something new and daring: it combines the advantage of security and the delight of adventure. T. S. Eliot I’ve decided to create an occasional series of posts around some of my favorite quotations and these will be characterised by no opening picture and a suitably enigmatic banner picture. I intend them to be short posts and they will therefore act as markers between more substantial, but maybe less meaningful or useful, posts and allow me to keep

The following is work-in-progress and based on a few loose notes from Hanzi Freinacht’s work on his upcoming book ‘The 6 Hidden Patterns of History’. This is the third book in Hanzi’s metamodern guides series. It takes on a developmental approach to world history and does so through the lens of six overarching developmentally derived patterns that Hanzi refers to as “metamemes”. Thanks to our monthly donators Hanzi can buy time to work on the book, so if you have a couple of bucks to spare each month, we would be very grateful if you could donate to Hanzi: https://donorbox.org/metamoderna.

Existential Politics should organize investments into new support structures for personal growth. I would like to suggest that we reintroduce—on a wide, societal level—the medieval notion of the via contemplativa, the contemplative life path. The term vita contemplativa (vita, with a “t”) is more commonly used —most famously in Hannah Arendt’s The Human Condition from 1958—and means “the contemplative life”. But here I’d like to stay with discussing the contemplative path and how it could be made part and parcel of day-to-day society and politics. The issue is not that society needs us to become monks and nuns, but that

At last we turn the page on an ugly chapter in American history. Now perhaps we can begin to talk about politics in positive terms again. While Joe Biden faces difficult challenges, and while his presidency will inevitably have shortcomings, I am hoping for the best. The post-progressive perspective I advocate is all about finding higher ground. And at this moment, President Biden is poised to take the first steps toward the higher cultural ground our nation needs. I’m rooting for his success! “To see the universal and all-pervading Spirit of Truth face to face, one must be able to love the meanest of creation as oneself. And a man who aspires after that cannot afford to keep out of any field of life. That is why my devotion to Truth has drawn me into the field of politics; and I can say without the slightest hesitation, and yet in all humility, that those who say that religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion means”.[i] —Gandhi To base a political ideology or program on an entirely “rational” or

Today’s blog post offers the stage to a project looking at experiences of the pandemic all around the world. Catherine Russell explains: 2020 saw a transformative series of events that have shaken the status quo. Around the world, countries and individuals have been forced to adapt to both direct and indirect impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. My new article was recently published in Integral Leadership Review: “Why Centrism Fails and How to Overcome Hyperpolarization.” From the article: “Among the many uses of integral philosophy, its most promising application is in the realm of politics. This is especially true of the hyperpolarized condition of politics in the U.S., where the growing intensity of America’s culture war now threatens the foundations of its democracy. Even though Donald Trump is no longer president, American culture and politics remain starkly and bitterly divided. Hyperpolarization, however, is not a problem that can be solved under America’s current cultural conditions. The only
