Tips for Receiving Feedback

Feedback can be hard to hear. Because of the tension between two core needs: learning and being accepted.
.
Even a benign suggestion can leave you feeling angry, anxious, threatened… Because it can activate psychological triggers.
.
These are some tips that can help you get ready to receive feedback:
.
Build your self-awareness and find strategies to cope with triggers, so you can still extract value from the feedback even when it’s poorly delivered.
.
Ask the person for what you need in order to be more open to listen.
.
Consider if you are ready to listen. If you’re not ready, set up a time that works best.
.
Ask questions – make sure you understand the other person’s perspective and what you could do differently.
.
Take your time to process – before you accept or reject it, do some reflection and analysis.
