How many of you associate “accountability” with punishment? Or fear of being told off?

This is one of those things that come from the hierarchical conditioning we learned in our childhood, ‘if I do something wrong, I’m going to get in trouble’.

But what about decentralised orgs?
Here we want to change the parent-child dynamic to an adult-to-adult one. No one is going to be the boss, there will be no punishment, and we’ll trust everyone to do what they say they’ll do.

So today we want to reflect about being…
Account-Able = able to give an honest account of what happened.

In a decentralised team, we’re all accountable to each other. So it’s up to you in your team to design your own systems for accountability.

Here are some practices that have helped in our teams:
– Daily stand-up meeting: short meeting where we ask everyone ‘what did you work on yesterday?, What are you working on today?, What support do you need?’. This builds the habit of transparency.
– Keep track of who is doing what tasks: ideally in a visual way like using a Kanban board (Asana or Trello online). Ask for updates and blocks, and review progress at the end of our work cycle.
– Invite regular feedback from peers
– Accountability buddies: someone that can help us stay on track for things that we find difficult.
