Wow — all week, I’ve been feeling a great deal of gratefulness and joy — for many many reasons, including the deeply moving experience of our recent gatherings of Brightening Every Darkness. It has stirred so much feeling among everyone who has attended, and that’s released a lot of energy for me to receive and conduct. I want to share what that’s opening up with those who have so generously given me your precious attention over the course of my life and my work — and to bless you and to benefit you however I can.

I am now in a new phase of my journey with this aggressive cancer, and there are new wisdom inquiries and blessings coming through that I can now share. What’s most prominent in my day-to-day experience is a disarming clarity: all I have now — and have ever had — is this precious present moment, the very heart of the mystery — non-separate, Divine, and infinitely creative. One breath to the next, what is shining forth is the always poignant and miraculous beauty of this wild, often-strange, glorious, crazy human existence. Life itself is just so tender, beautiful, and sacred that (if I’m paying real attention) it continues to awaken gratitude, humility and generosity in me.

My personal confrontation and “closeness” to death continues to find me less consumed with my own ordeal (even while it’s requiring a great deal from me!), and instead, I feel ever more available to be of benefit to others. Whatever it is that will disappear in my dying, the essence of me (and each of us) is deathless. It’s true that I am not separate from anything, and I’ve been waking up each day, more than ever before, as that non-separate Identity. It validates the primacy of spiritual practice — and the work that I and many colleagues have focused for some years on the collective — on our mutuality, on what’s between us, on what we sometimes call “we-space.”

I trust that some of you here on Facebook will still feel moved to join me for this special and intimate series of gatherings, Brightening Every Darkness: Collective and Personal Mortality amidst this Crisis — registration isn’t yet closed and our next session is tomorrow with my special guest and dear friend Craig Hamilton. Tomorrow, Craig and I will be exploring what we can learn at the edge of both mortality and morbidity (a word that points not to death but to the pain, discomfort and indignities that many of us fear more than death.) Early Buddhists called these the “heavenly messengers” because they can awaken us from unconsciousness. And they can transform us and enable us to yield to unreasonable joy.

Register now for Brightening Every Darkness to join me in conversations with Craig Hamilton, Indra Adnan and Diane Musho Hamilton.
