Dave’s Thinking: Focus day 💡 In the context of approaches to #strategy 💡

Dave Snowden has talked about maps and mapping a lot over the years. the process of strategy we are talking about maps, and the use of maps to navigate a partially charted future. So the way things follow this sequence:

1. Map the constraints, ideally using SenseMaker® for mass participation but one can also do it in a workshop.

2. Determine which constraints are acting as counterfactuals, and then map the degree of impossibility (energy, time etc) required to change them. Ideally, you would do this from your perspective, but also that of other actors/competitors as the counterfactuals will be different (agency, affordance and assemblage of which more in a future post). That gives you a temporal map of the field of play. Rather like in an estuary different things may be possible on an ebb tide and so on.

3. Determine which of the constraints are acting as constructors and which are positive (leave alone, amplify) or negative (dampen, destroy, distract).

4. Identify all coherent hypotheses about what would produce a beneficial change, or at least increase understanding and create safe-to-fail probes (per Cynefin) to see if a constructor or photo-constructor can be created (it might be from the collective impact of several probes, not just one) and again amplify or dampen.

5. Convey strategic intent (not the same thing as goals) at all levels of the #organzation so that the system has strategic responsiveness that can operate without the need for prediction.

6. In parallel create #humansensor networks and linked data analytics to provide fast feedback loops and, if a human sensor network, the ability for real-time interrogation.

7. Create dynamic approaches to resource allocation and (critically) points of interaction with more formal needs for stakeholder engagement.

🌟 Mapping what you know at the lowest level of coherent granularity to allow radical repurposing of existing capability for completely novel purposes – the exaptive practice of the complex domain of Cynefin. This series of blog posts will provide you with a deeper insight into this process https://thecynefin.co/the-process-of-strategy-3-of-3/?utm_source=MBR-FB-Post&utm_medium=MBR-FB-Post&utm_campaign=MBR-FB-Post&utm_id=MBR-FB-Post
