There have been many upgrades and applications of #SenseMaker over the years but we also value looking back at past projects. Today we are choosing to spotlight this #internationaldevelopment work in Kenya by GlobalGiving, supported by Irene Guijt, who in 2011 collected tens of thousands of stories to understand what #community members had, needed, and would like to see in future.
The story-based monitoring method we describe here provides reasonable information about what is working and insights into the root causes of complex social problems.
Outline to focus:
Part I: How this method evolved? Or is this the right road? (Page 3)
Part II: Example of how one organization uses the stories: TYSA (Page 16-24)
Part III: Some practical approaches for ensuring a high degree of honest stories relevant to the work (Page 27)
Part IIII: Methods for a self-organizing #survey, #Storytelling SMS game (Page 41)
Part V: 2530 stories data picture (Page 58)
This easy-read document gives a rich description of the methodological choices that the team had to make around #technology, #communityengagement, and costs in a low-resource setting. SenseMaker was used to get quickly available, context-rich data about “how these Kenyan communities could be supported”. This was built on trust and partnership of sense-making activities.
The Cynefin Co is able to provide the tools, but the magic of how those tools work in practice is with you. Let’s continue to learn from each other.
