Leadership has gotten a bad name, when we’re supposed to be non-patriarchal and non-hierarchical. Because so many bad things have been done in the name of leadership, it may seem like leadership is itself a bad thing. But I want to reclaim it and resuscitate it and call it to its higher order.

A leader is somebody who is faithful to a vision, to a possibility that might be new, that needs somebody to steward it, to guard it, and to draw others into it. A leader is not fundamentally interested in power. A leader is in service to something larger than themselves.

Those who also have that vision respect the leader who is stewarding it and has brought that vision to their awareness. They’re going to trust that leader. Respect and the authority comes not from power-over, not from “if you don’t do as I say, you’re fired,” but it comes from an earned trust.

And a recognition of “Oh, yes, you see something maybe better than I do. And I trust you to steward that and to hold that. And please tell me what I can do to contribute to this vision, because you see it really well.” A leader makes opportunities available to others to deliver their gifts.

The Sanity Project is an online program based on the idea that “sanity is a group project.” I offer information, practices, live calls, and some profoundly wise guests to help crystallize the collective holding of an island of sanity in the crazy times in which we live. Rolling admission is live for this six month program. Tuition is self-determined. Registration is now open at https://buff.ly/3rPjMF6
