My past seven days have been profoundly disarming — People have responded, at such a depth, and with such wisdom and generosity, to the first session of my new wisdom exploration “Brightening Every Darkness: Collective and Personal Mortality amidst this Crisis.”
First, over five hundred people have registered — and I’ve been receiving a truly inspiring outpouring of love, prayers, and expressions of spiritual partnership. Then (what a surprise) even some of my close neighbors began hearing and telling each other about the profundity of last Saturday’s session, approaching me and asking how they can participate. It’s been a lot of energy for me to conduct!

In our first session, with my dear, long-term friend Diane Musho Hamilton, I shared that even if we are among the last generations to be able to live as we do now — even if the horrors that come are the worst, worst case — still, even one moment of this blessed, amazing, conscious, embodied existence is infinitely precious. Our “consensus trance” blinds us to this wonder, but when we awaken to it together, we discover one another in the presence of something truly Sacred.
Maybe I am going to die soon, personally. Maybe our collective predicament will unravel the structures we depend on even faster than we imagine. Maybe everything I know and love about humanity and the natural world will be swept into fragmentation and disintegration. These are among the worst potentials. It can seem too much to bear. It is a profound paradox that, nonetheless, even if all of that comes to be, it does not diminish the beauty and sacredness at the heart of this very moment. And there lies miraculous transformative power. Especially if we arrive together in its presence.
